There are no top rails. The lower frame is deep and substantial enough to carry the whole structure on its own, which leaves the top clean and open. A tempered glass top sits flush into the side frames, so the joinery stays visible from every angle and the floor shows through the center. A table this exposed has nowhere to hide a poor cut, which is exactly why I build it this way.

3/8″ tempered safety glass, clear, set flush into a rabbet routed along the side frames. The wood surround is chamfered on every edge, softer to the touch and safer at a low height where shins and hands tend to find it. Tempering heat-treats the glass to several times the strength of ordinary plate. It resists impact and heat, and in the rare event it fails, it breaks into blunt granules instead of shards. Every top is cut to order and inspected by hand before it leaves the shop.

Frame sealed with clear lacquer. Wipe it with a warm, damp cloth and dry it right away. Skip the chemical cleaners. Dust with a soft cloth. Built for indoor use.
For the glass, use any ammonia-free glass cleaner, sprayed onto the cloth rather than the glass. Overspray settles into the frame joint and dulls the finish over time. Set a coaster or trivet under anything hot or wet, since the glass carries heat straight to the wood beneath it.
